English Premier League round up Saturday March 18, 2017

Weekend news

Seven English Premier League games were played on Saturday with Chelsea extending their lead at the top of the table. The three teams behind are set to play on Sunday.

West Bromwich Albion 3 – 1 Arsenal. Arsenal’s terrible run of form continued with a fourth Premier League loss in 5 games. Terrible defending allowed Dawson to score 2 goals along with teammate Robson-Kanu who scored after only 75 seconds after coming on. Sanchez scored his 22nd goal of the season. Arsenal’s long standing manager’s future is looking bleaker.

Crystal Palace 1-0 Watford. Watford captain suffered the misfortune of scoring the only goal of the game in his own net.

Stoke City 1-2 Chelsea. Chelsea moved a step closer to winning the Premier League title by beating Stoke. Willian scored from a free kick after 13 minutes, but Gary Cahill conceded a penalty that allowed Jon Walters to hammer home the equalizer. Cahill made amends by scoring the late winner. Chelsea have now won 20 of their past 23 matches in all competitions, and look unstoppable.

Everton 4-0 Hull City. Hull were already losing by a goal to nil when Hull player, Huddlestone was red carded for a reckless tackle. The one man advantage allowed Everton to completely dominate the game and scored three more, including 2 more for the in-form Lukaku who has now scored 21 goals. The last time an Everton player did this was Gary Lineker in the 1985-86 season.

Sunderland 0-0 Burnley. An uninspiring game with few chances with Sunderland wasting the chances that they did get and whilst winning a point remain favourites to be relegated.

Bournemouth 2-0 Swansea City. Bournemouth’s victory was the first time for a year that they have managed back to back victories. Afobe’s off target shot deflected off a defender before hitting the net in the 31st minute. He slotted in a sweet finish in the 72nd minute to ensure that Bournemouth got what they deserved from the match. Swansea dropped a place closer to the relegation zone with Bournemouth moving up the table, although they have some very challenging fixtures coming up.

West Ham United 2-3 Leicester City. The 2015-16 League Champions continue to improve with their 4th successive win since they controversially sacked their Manager, Claudio Ranieri. The victory was due in large part by a stunning performance by the goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
