image from:England 2-0 Lithuania: World Cup 2018 qualifier – as it happened

There were no English Premier League games during the weekend of March 25 – 26 because it was a weekend designated to World Cup qualifying games. The next FIFA World Cup will take place in Russia from June 14 to July 15, 2018.

I am like many English fans who would prefer to watch their club team play rather than England. One of the reasons is because throughout my lifetime England have consistently let their fans down. The most recent example of this was the last UEFA European Championship where England were knocked out of the tournament when they lost 2 -1 to Iceland. This was one of the biggest shocks in International Football history. England had won all ten qualifying games leading in to the tournament and expectations were high. It was extremely disappointing!

England did win their weekend game against Lithuania 2 – 0 and are currently on course to qualify for the World Cup. Like any England fan I am not expecting too much even if they do qualify. In the back of my mind I am still very optimistically hoping they will win though!

English Premier League games will be played again this weekend. My team Bournemouth will travel the short distance to Southampton to play in the local “derby” on Saturday.
