A derby game is always a big game in England. A “derby” game is when two teams which are geographically close to each other play against each other – normally from the same town, city or region. The atmosphere at these games is always electric and the fans become extremely animated.

The atmosphere on the pitch can also become very animated as most players understand the extra importance of winning these games. Fans will talk for weeks leading up to the game about the derby game which is coming up and then will talk for weeks afterwards about it, especially if they win. It is very important to win your derby games!

There are many derby games in English football. Some of the most famous currently in the English Premier League are:

Liverpool v Everton
Manchester United v Manchester City
West Ham v Tottenham Hotspurs
Southampton v Bournemouth

My team will make the short drive (45kms) to play Southampton on Saturday. We are seeking revenge after losing 3 -1 at home to Southampton last December. Each season there are two games between each club – one at home and one away. Win, lose or draw it will be a passionate game for the fans and players alike.
